Regenerative Design: "Skills for the Planet Blueprint"
At Puntoasterisco, we've always believed in the transformative power of design. It's not just about creating memorable brands or impactful experiences; it's about shaping our world. Today, more than ever, we understand the immense responsibility that comes with this.
As the Design Council aptly puts it: "Everything that is not made by nature has been designed by someone. Design therefore holds immense power over how our world is shaped. While design has created life-advancing innovations for some, the way that we design –the materials and energy we use, the waste we create, the voices we marginalize– has formed part of the extractive system that has caused the climate and biodiversity crisis. So, we need to change the way that we design to regenerate life for all: people and planet."
This statement is not only powerful, but it also indicates that we are on the cusp of a new era for design. We're keenly aware that design is one of the most potent tools we have to build a better future.
It's time to join this global action, and we're proud to share information about the "Skills for the Planet Blueprint" initiative, launched by the Design Council last June. This project is a call to equip a new generation of professionals with the "green skills" needed for the transition to a more sustainable economy.
The Blueprint isn't just a document; it's a practical roadmap that aims to close the ecological design skills gap. The call isn't solely for creative minds but also for companies that contract design services. Change has to be systemic. Key aspects include:
A Green Design Mindset
Updated Foundational Design Skills
Specific Green Design Skills
The Blueprint defines 18 crucial skills, organized into six interconnected areas:
Regenerate nature: Design with and for natural systems.
Embed circularity: Shift from a linear to a circular model, reducing waste and maximizing resource value.
Eliminate emissions: Reduce the carbon footprint of products, services, and processes.
Empower green communities: Create solutions that benefit people and promote sustainable lifestyles.
Influence green behavior: Design to facilitate more sustainable decisions and habits.
Evaluate green impact: Continuously measure and improve the environmental and social impact of design.
The Design Council has an ambitious mission: to train one million designers with these green skills by 2030. However, we reiterate that this is an open invitation to all industries. Together, we can build a future where design is synonymous with development that's greener, more inclusive, and truly regenerative.
At Puntoasterisco, we're committed to spreading the word about this vital initiative and celebrate that some of our company's collaborators are personally taking on the challenge to be part of the one million designers.
The future of design is for everyone.
